chapter 3 Flashcards
NOT ON FINAL #1: correspondent inferences
characterize someone as having a personality trait that corresponds to his or her observed behavior
NOT ON FINAL #1: 3 inferences
freely chooses to perform behavior (individual must be choosing to perform their behavior with no outside forces acting on them), behavior has unique effect that other behaviors don’t, behavior is unexpected
NOT ON FINAL #1: relate correspondence inference to own life
watching group presentations in class, both partners seem unprepared, but one seems to have no idea what he was time. stumbled over his words and couldn’t decide how to say what he wanted to, seemed like he was reading straight from the slide. he stared at the computer and slouched during the presentation. his partner had to tell him to change to the next slide. i assume that he is unmotivated due to his behavior
NOT ON FINAL #1: relate condition to example
freely choose to perform behavior-condition was supported. there was no one forcing the partner to act so uninterested in his own presentation
behavior has unique effect-fewer effects that a behavior shares with other possible choices, the easier it is to decide which effect motivated behavior. harder to be proved true. its possible that the partner that spoke the most did the entire project, so the one that seemed uninterested really didn’t know what was going on. this would still lead to the assumption that he is unmotivated since he didn’t do the project
behavior is unexpected-i don’t know the oy that showed a lack of preparedness and therefore can’t say if this was unusual behavior
NOT ON FINAL #1: what other factors may have explained the behavior
my example is mostly justified by correspondent interference other than the conditon of unexpected behavior because i do not know him to judge that. there could be other factors, like maybe he was sick or tired
2: superficial processing
impression formed with minimal effort based on one or two obvious attributes.
2: superficial processing example
judging someones appearance upon the first meeting, deciding whether or not one is attractive happens immediately, without thinking too much
2: systematic processing
thinking deeper and using more information to form a judgement
2: systematic processing example
when you’re trying to decide if you and the boy you’ve been hanging out with are compatible enough to start a relationship
2: when are people more likely to engage in each type of processing
superficial processing-when immediately meeting someone. systematic-when superficial does not supply enough satisfactory info or when one is motivated and has the ability to process throgoughly
