to begin the interview, to introduce a new section of questions, and whenever the person introduces a new topic
when should you use closed or direct questions
to speed up the interview, and when you need specific facts such as past medical history
this type of response encourages the patient to say more, it shows you are interested (mm-hmm go on, uh huh)

this type of response communicates that the patient has time to think
silences
this type of response echoes patient’s words by repeating part of what the person just said
reflection
this type of response names a feeling and allows its expression; strengthens rapport
