Chapter 3- Acids And Alkalis Flashcards
What are dilute acids?
Dilute acids are not very harmful. If a dilute acid makes contact with your skin, it will become red or blistered.
What does it mean if a acid is toxic?
It means it can kill you.
What does it mean if an acid is corrosive?
It means it can destroy living tissue e.g. skin
What does it mean if an acid is oxidising?
It means that adding oxygen can cause flame
What does it mean if an acid is radiational?
It can damage living tissue AND cause mutations
What does it mean if an acid Is flammable?
It can be set on fire easily
What does it mean if an acid is a bio hazard?
It poses threat to human health
What does it mean if an acid is irritant?
It can irritate skin
What does it mean if an acid is harmful?
It is similar to toxic substances but not as harmful
What is a concentrated acid?
A concentrated acid is corrosive. They can attack metals AND destroy skin if spilled.
What are bases?
Bases are another group of chemicals- opposite to acids. They are substances that neutralise acids- those that dissolve in water are called alkalis
Give 3 examples of a type of acid.
- toxic
- corrosive
- oxidising
- radiational
- flammable
- bio hazard
- irritant
- harmful
What is the pH scale?
The pH scale is a line that shows the strength of acids and alkalis e.g. acids are from 1-6 (red-yellowish green) and alkalis are from 8-14 (dark green-dark purple) 7 is neutral ( water)
What is universal indicator?
Universal indicator shows what strength each substance is when you mix a drop of it into the substance e.g. NaOH is dark purple (14) which is a strong acid
What happens when you mix an acid and an alkali?
If they’re of a similar pH value hen they neutralise.
