Chapter 3 - Inhalation and Exhalation Flashcards
What intercostal muscles does inhalation use?
external intercostal muscles
What happens during inhalation?
Air goes in, there is an increase in volume, negative pressure develops, the diaphram moves down and the rib cage moves out and up
What causes inhalation?
External intercostal muscles contract moving the rib cage up and out as well as the diaphram contracts moving down
What happens during normal exhalation?
Air goes out, there is a decrease in volume, positive pressure develops, the diaphram moves up and the rib cage goes down and in
What causes normal exhalation?
external intercostal muscles just relax the rib cage moves down and in as well as the diaphram just relaxes moving up
What happens during forced exhalation?
Air goes out, there is a decrease in volume, positive pressure develops, the diaphram moves up and the rib cage goes down and in
What causes forced exhalation?
Internal intercostal muscles contract bring the rib cage down and in. the abdominal muscles also contract forcing the diaphram down.
