3
Q

Tell me about vibrations in ropes.

A

Particles vibrate in fixed positions.
Energy in particles travels from one place to another by a single travelling pulse
The direction in which the wave travels is perpendicular to the direction of disturbance.

4
Q

Tell me about vibrations in springs

A

The wave travels in the same direction as the disturbance.
The vibrations push and pull nearby molecules, causing them to move forward and backward

Q

What does refraction involve?

16
Q

How do waves refract?

A

If the wave enters a more optically dense medium, its speed decreases and it bends towards the normal.

If the wave enters a less optically dense medium, its speed increases and it bends away from the normal

In all cases, the frequency stays the same but the wavelength changes.

17
Q

What affects the speed of waves travelling in water?

A

The depth of the water

Water waves travel fastes when the medium is the deepest.

If water waves are passing from deep water into shallow water, they will slow down.

18
Q

What happens when the water waves decrease in speed?

A

There will also be a decrease in wavelength, which causes a change in direction.

19
Q

What is diffraction?

A

A change in direction of waves as they pass through an opening or around a barrier in their path

20
Q

What happens if the gap is narrow?

A

The narrower the gap, the greater the wavelength, the more the diffraction.

21
Q

Draw diffracted waves.
