Chapter 3: Waves (Pt.1) Flashcards
How does a wave transfer energy?
From one place to another without transferring matter in the process
What is disturbance.
The up and down movement of wave.
Tell me about vibrations in ropes.
Particles vibrate in fixed positions.
Energy in particles travels from one place to another by a single travelling pulse
The direction in which the wave travels is perpendicular to the direction of disturbance.
Tell me about vibrations in springs
The wave travels in the same direction as the disturbance.
The vibrations push and pull nearby molecules, causing them to move forward and backward
Explain the features of a wave using a diagram.
How do you calculate wave speed?
What are transverse waves?
Waves where the medium vibrates perpendicular to the direction of its motion.
Give examples of transverse waves.
Electromagnetic waves
Waves on a rope
Water waves
Seismic S waves
What are longitudinal waves?
Waves which are vibrating in the direction of motion
Give examples of longitudinal waves.
Sound waves
Waves on a spring
Seismic P waves
Draw a reflected wave.
What is the law of reflection?
Angle of incidence = angle of reflection
What does refraction involve?
A change in the direction of waves as they pass from one medium to another
