Chapter 4 Flashcards
Functions
Controls what enters and exits the cell to maintain internal balance
Lipid bilayer
2 layers
Selectively permeable
Cell membranes allows some molecules in and keeps other molecules out.
Passive transport
Doesn’t use energy
Active transport
Used energy
Diffusion
Random movement of particles from high to low concentration until all molecules are evenly spaced
Facilitated diffusion
Specific particles though transport proteins found in the membrane
Osmosis
Water moves from high to low concentration
HypOtonic
Low to high
Water moves from the solution to inside the cell. Cell swells and bursts open (cytolysis)
HypERtonic
High to low
Water moves from inside the cell into the solution: Cell shrinks (Plasmolysis)
Isotonic
Equal concentration for both inside and outside
Concentration gradient
When two concentrations of a substance are separated by a barrier
Homeostasis
Processes that keep internal systems in balance when external conditions keep changing
Qualitative observations
Observations that involve descriptions; observations that are relative or subjective
Organelle
Compartment within cells that perform specific functions
