Chapter 5 Flashcards
Experiment
We impose some treatment on individuals in order to observe their responses
Sampling
Studying part in order to gain information about the whole
Observational study
Individuals are observed and we measure variables of interest but do not influence their responses
Census
Attempt to contact every individual in the entire population
Bias
Systematically favors certain outcomes over others
Simple Random Sample
Every set of individuals has an equal chance of being selected
Probablitiy sample
Sample chosen by chance in which the probability of each being selected is known before hand
Strata
Common characteristic of individuals
Stratified Random Sample
Do a separate SRS for each strata and combine their results to form the sample
Cluster Sampling
Divides the population into groups and randomly selects some of the clusters where all of the individuals are sampled
Response bias
Behavior of the interviewer may cause the response to change
Sample frame
List of individuals from which a sample is actually selected
Control
Effect of lurking variables are minimized by comparison in the control group
Factors
Explanatory variables in an experiment
Control group
Group who gets no active treatment
