Chapter 5: Lesson 2 Flashcards
Diffusion
The tendency of particles to spread out evenly in an available space
In diffusion, through what concentration gradient do particles spread?
From an area of higher concentration of particles to an area of lower concentration of particles
Dynamic equilibrium
No net change in concentration
Examples of diffusion
Dropping a drop of food coloring into water, perfume being sprayed into an open space
Passive transport
Diffusion across a membrane that does not require energy investment
Examples of passive transport
The sole means by which oxygen enters your cells and carbon dioxide exits your cells
Osmosis
The diffusion of water across a selectively semi-permeable membrane
Tonicity
The ability of a surrounding solution to cause a cell to gain or lose a cell
Isotonic solution
A solution where the concentration is the same on both sides of a membrane
Hypotonic solution
A solution which has a low solute concentration (the solute concentration is lower on the outside of the cell)
Hypertonic solution
A solution where there is a high solute concentration (the solute concentration is higher on the outside of the cell)
What types of solutions do animals prefer?
Isotonic solutions
Osmoregulation
The regulation of osmotic pressure in an organism’s fluids to have homeostasis
Osmoconformer
A type of osmoregulation where the internal osmolarity is equal to that of the surrounding sea water
Osmoregulator
A type of osmoregulation where they regulate the body’s osmolarity so that it is always consistent
