Chapter 6 Flashcards
The computer processor (CPU) is composed of two units
The control unit and the arithmetic logic unit
The control unit
Coordinates the activities of all the other computer components
A CPU’s processing power is determined by three factors
Clock speed
Whether it has multiple cores
Amount of cache memory
Cache memory
A form of RAM that gets data to the CPU for processing inch faster than bringing the data in from the computers RAM
Three levels of cache memory
L1- storage of commands just used
L2- more storage than L1
L3- slower for CPU to reach, larger in size than L2 cache
Random Access Memory (RAM)
You’re computers temporary storage space
Short term memory
GBs
What storage capacity is measured in
Super fetch
A memory management technique that monitors applications you are using and preloads them into your system memory for easy access
Mechanical hard drive
The largest capacity of any storage device
A solid state drive (SSD)
Uses electronic memory and has no mechanical motors or moving parts
Incredibly fast access times
Optical drives
Use laser to store and read data. Data is saved to CD
Three formats of optical media
Read only (ROM)
Recordable (R)
Rewritable (RW)
Video card
An expansion card that’s installed inside the system unit to allow you to view images on your computer
You can connect video equipment to your computer using on of three ports
DVI ports for digital LCD monitors
HDMI ports for high def TVs, blue rays, or game consoles
DisplayPort for digital monitors or projectors
Video cards come with their own
Graphics Processing Unit (GPU)
