Chapter 6: bone formation/ossification Flashcards
How many forms of bone formation/ossification is there?
there are two types that start at about week 9 of development
What is intramembranous ossification?
bones formed from membrane; mainly flat bones of the skull.
Step 1 of intramembranous ossification
Step 2 of intramembranous ossification
step 3 of intramembranous ossification
Step 4 of intramembranous ossification
What is endochondral ossification?
bones formed from hyaline cartilage. most bones are formed by this type of ossification
What is the first step in endochondral ossification?
the bone collar forms and blood vessels grow from perichondrium into cartilage
What is the second step in endochondral ossification?
cartilage in center of the diaphysis calcifies; cavities develop where cartilage deteriorates
What is the third step in endochondral ossification?
blood vessels of periosteal bud go into cavities and spongy bone forms
What is the fourth step in endochondral ossification?
medullary cavity forms and ossification centers develop in epiphyses
What is the fifth step in endochondral ossification?
epiphyseal plates form between epiphyses and diaphysis
resting zone - cartilage resting from growing
proliferation zone - cartilage is growing; bone is growing in length at both ends
epiphyseal line - where epiphyseal plate ossifies and bone becomes more dense.
