Chapter 7 & 9 Flashcards
Short Column
Small height to width ratio
Ultimate load carrying capacity is based on material strength and cross section material not length
Long column
Large height to width ratio
Ultimate load carrying capacity is not primarily based on the materials strength and total amount of cross section material but overall length and slowness ratio
Slenderness ratio
Of a column ratio between the height or length of a structural element and the width of thickened of the element. The higher the slenderness ratio, the more slender the structural element
Buckling
The axial load at which a straight column or structural member starts to bend
Stabilizing subsystems
Structural systems that provide resistance to lateral (horizontal) loads
Shear wall
Wall which in its own place carries shear resulting from lateral loads such a wind blast or earthquake
Braced frame
The frame of a building in which the resistance to lateral forces as to frame instability by providing bracing
Resisting walls
Two parallels
Non stable in other direction
Resisting walls
Two perpendicular
Non stable corner room
Resisting walls
Three parallel + perpendicular
Stable
