Stages of fractional distillation
A
- Oil is heated until it turns to gas. The gas enters a fractionating column
- In the column theres a temp gradient (hot at bottom and gets cooler as you go up)
- The more hydrocarbons there are the higher the boiling point is. They condense back into liquids and drain out early where as smaller hydrocarbons have a lower boiling point and drain out later on
- You then end up with your crude oil
