Spongy bone
Composed of small needle-like pieces of bone and lots of open space
What are the different shapes
Long, short, flat, irregular
Long
shaft with heads at both end, mostly compact bone, found in limbs
Short
cube-shaped, contain mostly spongy bone
sesamoid
special kind of short bone that forms inside tendons
Flat
thin, flattened, usually curved, outside is compact, inside is spongy
wormian
Special kind of flat bone found in cranial structure lines
Irregular
Bones that don’t fit into any of the other categories
Gross anatomy
Study of a long bone
Diaphysis
Shaft, makes up most of bones length, composed of compact bone
