Chapter 7 Vocab Flashcards
Magnetic field
Region that surrounds a magnet; exerts force on other magnets and objects made of magnetic materials.
Magnetic domain
Group of atoms in a magnetic materiel where the magnetic poles of the atoms of aligned in the same direction
Magnetic pole
Region on a magnet where the magnetic force entered by the magnet is the strongest
Magnetism
Properties and interactions of magnets
Electric motor
Device that converts electrical energy to mechanical energy
Electromagnet
Temporary magnet created when there is a current in a wire coil
Electromagnetic force
The attractiveness or repulsive force between electric charges and magnets
Electromagnetism
The interaction between electric charges and magnets
Galvanometer
Device that uses an electromagnet to measure electric current
Solenoid
Cylindrical coil of wire used to produce a magnetic field when an electric current passes through the wire
Alternating current
Electrical current that reverses it direction of flow in a regular pattern
Direct current
Electric current that flows only in one direction
Electromagnetic induction
Process by which electric current is produced in a wire loop by a changing magnetic field
Generator
Device that uses electromagnetic induction to convert mechanical energy to electrical energy
Transformer
Device that uses electromagnetic induction to increase or decrease the voltage of an alternating current
