Chapter 8 Joints Flashcards

1
Q

Articulations

A
  • aka joints
  • junctions between bones
  • don’t break joints
  • functions:
  • Bind parts of the skeletal system together
  • Make bone growth possible.
  • Permits parts of the skeleton to change shape during childbirth – yay!
  • Enable body to move in response to skeletal muscle contractions
  • Muscle has to cross joint in order to act on the joint

Q

Fibrous Joints

A
  • Connected by dense CT
  • Many collagenous fibers
  • Between bones in close contact
  • Syndesmosis, Suture, Gomphosis

Q

Syndesmosis

A
  • Long fibers connect bones
  • Amphiarthrotic (slightly movable)
  • Distal ends of tibia and fibula

Q

Suture

A
  • Between flat bones of skull
  • Synarthrotic (immovable)
  • Thin layer of CT connects bones
  • Fontanels allow the skull to change shape slightly during birth

Q

Gomphosis

A
  • Cone-shaped bony process in a socket
  • Tooth in jawbone, attached by the periodontal ligament
  • Synarthrotic (immovable)

Q

Cartilaginous Joints

A

Held together by hyaline cartilage or fibrocartilage

- Synchondrosis and Symphysis

Q

Synchondrosis

A
  • Bands of hyaline cartilage unite bones
  • Many are temporary structures & disappear
  • Ex. Epiphyseal plate
  • Between manubrium and first rib
  • Synarthrotic (immovable)

Q

Symphysis

A
  • The articular surface is covered with a thin layer of hyaline cartilage and that is attached to a pad of fibrocartilage between bones:
  • Ex. Pubis symphysis
  • Joint between bodies of the vertebrae
  • Amphiarthrotic – slightly movable

Q

Synovial Joints

A
  • Most complex
  • Allow free movement
  • Consist of articular cartilage, a joint capsule (what pops when you pop your knuckles), & synovial membrane

Q

Joints are grouped by the degree of movement possible at the junction

A
  • Synarthrotic: immovable (head)
  • Amphiarthrotic: slightly movable
  • Diarthrotic: feely moveable
