Ethnic Group
Members that share the same cultural heritage
Race
A group of people perceived to be distinct due to their physical appearance.
One-drop rule
The policy that if someone had ANY trace of black heritage, they were black legally.
Privilege
Unearned advantages granted to a person due to their membership in a certain social group
Prejudice
Irrational feelings toward members of a particular social group
Discrimination
Treating certain groups better than others
Racism
Treating certain groups better than others based on their race.
Name all steps of the assimilation process:
- Contact - groups meet
- Conflict - groups compete for power
- Accommodation - one group asserts dominance
- Assimilation - minority groups embrace the ways of the dominant group and become accepted into it.

Internal Colonialism
When one group exploits another in the process of obtaining resources and/or other economic value.
Ethnocentrism
The idea that one’s culture is superior to other cultures.
What are the types of social inequality?
- Internal - based on people’s natural abilities
- External - those forced upon people.
Color-blind ideology
A way of viewing race that maintains that if we ignore race and racial issues, racism will not exist.
In effect, this actually supports racial inequality as racism is left unchecked.
Racism Evasiveness
Ignoring issues of racism, allowing racism to operate unchecked.
Microaggressions
Everyday slights aim at racial and ethnic minority groups, potentially causing real damage.
