Q

basic def. of these 4 body heat loss methods

A

Radiation: Heat transferred in waves( standing near a fire, tanning)

Evaporation: Heat energy used to convert a liquid to a gas, resulting in lowered temp. (sweating)

Conduction: Heat is transfered via contact (sitting on a cold seat, jumping into a warm spa)

Convection: In fluids where heat is carried in convection currents. When a fluid( gas, liquid) is heated it becomes less dense, moves upwards (water heating in a pot)

Q

Thermoregulation

A

is the balancing of heat gain with heat loss that allows the human body to maintain a constant, efficient temperature of 36.8 degrees.

Q

How does the body prevent heat loss?

A

Vasoconstriction
Adrenal medulla stimulation
Thyroid stimulation BOTH INCREASE METABOLISM, CELLULAR RESPIRATION
Shivering
Behavioural; more clothes, reduce surface area, heater, cuddling up

Q

How does the body prevent heat rising?

A

Vasodilation
Sweating
decrease in metabolic rate( summer, long term but effective)
Behavural; lack of voluntary activity, removal of clothes, air con, spread out, expand surface area

Homeostasis definition

A

The process of keeping the internal environment inside the body fairly constant around a set point

Q

Hyperthermia vs hypothermia and why these are bad;

A

Hyper: too hot
Hypo: too cold
Bad because enzymes work best at 36.8; enzymes won’t function effectively.
