CHAPTER ONE Flashcards
what is environment?
sum total of all living and non living elements and their effects towards human life
biotic elements?
animals, plants, forests, fisheries and birds
abiotic elements?
water, land, sunlight rocks and air
climate?
state of the atmosphere over long time periods
ecosystem?
community of living and non living things that work together.
what causes climate change?
increase in the earths tempreture which comes from increased green house gases
what are the green house gases?
carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, HFC,
and their are extra green houses gases coming from burning fossil fuels besides human activities such as cutting trees, raising live stock
what are the indirect estimates of tempreture?
tree rings and ice cores
what was the warmest 30 year period?
from 1989 to 2019 was the warmest more than 800 years
effects of human activities?
1- observed patterns of surface warming
2- temperatures changes through the atmosphere
3- increase in ocean heat
4- increase in atmospheric moisture
5- sea levels rise and increased melting of ice
weather vs climate
weather: current state of the atmosphere and is measurable in terms of temperature, pressure, humidity, wind speed. climate: state of the atmosphere over long peroid of time
Rising global temperatures are leading to other changes around the world, such as:
1- stronger hurricanes
2- melting ice
3- wildlife habitat loss
