Chemical Analysis Flashcards
What is a pure substance?
A single element or compound not mixed with any other substance.
What is a formulation?
A mixture of compounds in measured quantities that have been designed as a useful product.
Examples of formulations?
Fuels
Paints
Medicines
Describe paper chromatography.
1.Draw a start line at the bottom of the paper.
2.Spot the mixture on the line.
3.Fill a beaker with a small amount of solvent (make sure it doesn’t touch the start line of the paper when the paper is put in)
4.Hang the paper on a rod and place it in the beaker.
5.Solvent travels up paper and separates the components
6.Before the solvent reaches the end, take out the paper and mark the finish line.
7.Allow the paper to dry.
How is Rf calculated?
Distance moved by spot/distance moved by solvent.
Hydrogen test?
Place a lit splint over the mouth of the test tube. If a squeaky pop is heard then hydrogen is present.
Oxygen test?
Glowing splint relights.
Carbon dioxide test?
Limewater when shaken turns milky.
Chlorine test?
Use damp litmus paper. If it turns white chlorine is present.
What are cations?
Positive ions
What are anions?
Negative ions
What is the stationary phase?
The paper. It doesnt move.
What is the mobile phase?
The solvent. It moves.
