Chemical Change Flashcards
Identify that new substances are produced in chemical changes, but not in physical changes.
The kind of matter changes and at least one new substance with new properties is formed.
Identify that chemical change may be recognised by changes in the properties of substances, such as colour.
The five conditions of chemical change: color change, formation of a precipitate, formation of a gas, odor change, temperature change.
Identify that physical changes, such as change of state, are often easily reversed
Physical changes in matter are often reversible: An ice cube can melt into liquid water, and then the liquid water can be frozen back into an ice cube.
Identify that chemical changes are often difficult to reverse.
A log burned in a fire turns to ashes, but the ashes cannot be changed back into a log.
Distinguish between physical changes and chemical changes.
In a physical change the appearance or form of the matter changes but the kind of matter in the substance does not. However in a chemical change, the kind of matter changes and at least one new substance with new properties is formed.
Identify that a chemical change (reaction) may be described by a chemical equation.
change in color, energy change (temperature change or light produced), gas production, something burning, and the formation of a precipitate.
word equation for a chemical reaction example
potassium hydroxide + sulfuric acid → potassium sulfate + water.
