Chemical Changes Flashcards
Combustion
Burning - a fuel reacts with oxygen to release energy
3 things needed for combustion
Fuel. Heating and oxygen
Combustion equation
Hydrocarbon + oxygen = carbon dioxide + water + energy
Oxidation
When a substance reacts and combines with oxygen
Thermal decomposition
When a substance breaks down into at least 2 other substances when heated
Exothermic reaction
A reaction that transfers energy to the surroundings
Example of an exothermic reaction
Combustion
Endothermic reaction
A reaction that takes in heat from the surroundings
Example of an endothermic reaction
Thermal decomposition
Catalyst
A substance which speeds up a chemical reaction without being changed or used up in the reaction itself
Advantage of catalysts
Increase speed and efficiency of the reaction
Can be reused
Disadvantages of catalysts
Can be poisoned by impurities so they need to be cleaned
