Chemistry (1st unit 2023 trimester 3) Flashcards
What is an ion?
An atom (or group of atoms) that has lost or gained electrons and is now charged is called an ion. Cations are positive and anions are negative.
What is an element?
A substance made from only one type of atom (all the atoms have the same atomic number)
What is a molecule?
A group of two or more atoms held together by covalent bonds in a defined arrangement. They can be elements or compounds.
What is a compound?
A substance made from more than one type of atom, chemically bonded together.
What is a mixture?
A mixture is a composition of two or more substances that are not chemically combined with each other and are capable of begin separated using physical techniques (as opposed to needing a chemical reaction reaction take place)
What is the atomic radius?
The distance between the nucleus and the outermost electron/s.
