Chemistry Basics Flashcards

1
Q

What is an atom? What is its charge and why is this?

A

Atoms are the building blocks of everything. They are neutral as the number of protons and electrons with opposite charges are the cancel each other out.

Q

What two types of elements does IONIC BONDING occur in? What is IONIC BONDING?

A

Ionic bonding happens between metals and non-metals.Ionic bonding is when a metal loses its electron when it reacts with a non-metal to form positive ions and vise versa. Consists of ions, not molecules.

Q

Why is the attraction so strong between the two?

A

This is due to the fact that they have opposite charges.

Q

When does COVALENT BONDING occur? What is COVALENT BONDING?

A

Covalent bonding occurs when two non-metals react with eachother. Covalent bonding involves the two or more atoms of the non-metals share electrons to fill their outer shells(usually) this is why Oxygen has two Hydrogen molecules attached to it, as only with two will all of the atoms to form the molecules have full outer shells.
