Chemistry -Sem 2 Flashcards
What are the elements from group 1 and 2 called?
1 - Alkali metals
2 - Alkaline metals
What are some characteristic of Alkali and Alkaline metals?
- They form 1+ ions
- They are far too reactive to be found naturally in their pure forms (Alkali Metals)
- They display similar extreme chemical behaviour
What are the elements from groups 3-12 called?
Transition metals.
What are some characteristics of transition metals?
- they all tend to be relatively hard with high melting points
- they form coloured compounds
- they are less reactive then alkali metals
What are the elements from group 17 called?
Halogens
What are some characteristics of halogens?
- they form -1 ions
- they are not found naturally in their pure form but are in salts
- they become less reactive as you move down the group
What are the elements from group 18 called?
Noble gases
What are some characteristics of noble gases?
- they occur naturally in the atmosphere
- they are incredibly stable and react under rare and extreme circumstances
What are some properties of metals?
- they are generally hard
- they can conduct
- they have positive ions
- they have a weak hold on their outer-she’ll electrons
What is a decomposition reaction?
A reaction where a single reactant breaks down to form two or more products.
What is a combination reaction?
A reaction where two or more reactants combine to form a single product
What is a redox reaction?
A reaction when both oxidation and reduction occurs.
What is oxidation and reduction?
Oxidation - when oxygen atoms are gained
Reduction - when oxygen atoms are lost
What is a metal displacement reaction?
A reaction where a more reactive metal replaces a less reactive metal in a solution and the less reactive metal becomes a solid
What is metallic bonding?
A sharing of electrons between several atoms of a metal element.
