A

1925: Chiang Kia-Shek took over the Nationalist party following Sen’s death
1926: capture Beijing with the help of communists and established a new government
1927: Massacre of Chinese communists (threat to power) sparked a 22-year Civil War (Communists vs. Nationalists)
Mao Zedong led the communists

Explain the People’s Republic of China

A

The communists won the Civil War

Mao Zedong focused on the peasantry rather than the urban upper-class
Seized urban and upper-class property to give to the poor: those who refused were sent to labor camps or killed
Collectivization: pooling land to increase production
Great Leap Forward: focused on industrialization and increasing economic productivity
Communes, creation of poor quality goods, etc
Bad weather and Gov. food restrictions led to 50 million deaths

A

Cultural Revolution (1966-1976)
Goal: Eliminate bourgeoisie ideals
Youth underwent revolution to make communism appealing
Little Red Book: Mao quotes to appeal to the youth
Destroy four olds: customs, ideas, habits, culture
Almost a Civil War: false accusations and humiliation, forced to leave jobs and perform labor
Schools and factories were closed
Army restored order
