circulatory system Flashcards
circulatory system
the system that carries matierials around the body it consists of the heart, blood and blood vessels
structure of the arteries
arteries have thick muscular walls to tolerate pressure from the heart pumping
function of the arteries
to carry blood away from the heart
structure of the capillaries
very thin, one cell thick blood vessels , just wide enough for red blood cells
structure of the veins
thin muscular walls contain valves to stop the backflow of blood
function of the veins
to carry blood to the heart
which blood vessel carries oxygen rich blood to the heart
pulmonary vein
what chamber of the heart does oxygen rich blood coming from the lungs go into
left atrium
what does the aorta do?
the aorta carries oxygen rich blood t the rest of the body
what blood vessel does carbon-dioxide rich blood leave the heart for the lungs through
pulmonary artery
carbon-rich blood enters the heart through the…
vena cava
why is the heart called a double system
the right side pumps blood to the lungs and the left side pups blood to the body (cells), they pump simultaneously
what does blood do?
blood carries oxygen, glucose, carbon-dioxide, nutrients and waste to and from cells
red blood cells
contain haemoglobin and carry oxygen
white blood cells
are part of the immune system and fight disease
