Circulatory system Flashcards
What type of blood does the right ventricle pump? And where to?
deoxygenated blood to the lungs
What type of blood does the left ventricle pump? And where to?
oxygenated blood to the other organs in the body
What are the walls of the heart mostly made of?
Muscle tissue
When the atria contract, where does the blood go?
Into the ventricles
When the ventricles contact, Where does the blood go?
Into the Pulmonary artery and the aorta, and out of the heart.
After the Blood is pushed out of the heart where does it go?
it flows to the organs throughout he arteries, and returns through the veins.
What is a pacemaker?
A group of cells in the right atrium that produce small electrical impulses which spread to the surrounding muscle cells, causing them to contract.
Name the three different types of blood vessels and describe their functions.
Artery - carry the blood away from the heart
Vein - these are involved in the exchange of materials at the tissue
Capillaries - carry blood to the heart
Describe the artery walls.
Strong and elastic
What is the hole in the middle of the artery called?
Lumen
Which two blood vessels link?
Artery and Capillary
How thick are the walls of capillaries?
one cell thick
How do capillaries work with transferring through cells?
they carry the blood really close to every cell in the body to exchange substances with them. They have permeable walls, so substances can diffuse in and out. Due to their thin walls, the rate of diffusion is faster as there is less distance over which it occurs.
List some differences between the arteries and veins
Blood in the arteries is at a higher pressure whereas blood in the veins is at a lower pressure. Veins have a bigger lumen that arteries. Veins have valves but arteries don’t.
How do you calculate the rate of blood flow? Unit?
volume of blood divided by the number of minutes.
ml/min
