Class 1 Flashcards
What is the definition of sports massage?
- massage that focuses on muscles relevant
- for athletes who train continuously, the goal is to enhance endurance, lessen the chance of injury and shorten the time needed to recover from an event
- may utilize a variety of techniques/modalities such as classic swedish massage, trigger point therapy, range of motion and stretching as well as hydrotherapy
Explain “Know Thy Sport”
- research the specific sport (what exactly sport is)
- know the positions (tennis-upper body, soccer-lower and core)
- know which muscles are engaged (tennis-SITS, soccer-glutes/legs)
- prevent injury through knowledge of the sport and athlete
What are the two main benefits of sports massage for athletes?
physiological and psychological
What are the physiological effects of sports massage?
-can be broken down into structural and systemic effects.
What are the structural effects of sports massage? (part of the physiological effects)
- improvement in ROM and tissue flexibility
- reduction of muscle cramps, spasms and MFTP
- Enhancement of Collagen Remodeling
What are the systemic effects of sports massage? (part of the physiological effects)
- enhancement of local circulation
- reduction of edema
- reduces pain
What are the psychological effects of sports massage?
-The psychological effects identify the objective and measurable benefits of a sport massage.
What some psychological factors that affect performance and healing?
- mind set
- mental toughness
- focus
- desire
What are some general benefits of sports massage for psychological effects?
- decreases anxiety and/or depression
- enhances sense of well-being and mental focus
- improves sleep patterns thereby improving the body’s recovery
- identifies areas of tension or soreness to be addressed before an injury occurs
- provides kinesthetic feedback creating a positive mind set. (ie. an athlete feels muscles relax and joint decompression thereby leading to greater sense of ease of mvmt)
- pain is often based around an individual’s subjective perception of it therefore reduction of pain can bring about psychological benefits
What is the main goal of a sports massage?
the goal of an athletic treatment is to maintain and/or restore optimal health of the athlete to help with his/her performance in their sport
What are the objectives and tasks of sports massage?
- enhance performance
- restoration
- prevention
- rehabilitation
What does it mean to enhance the performance of an athlete?
- help the athlete to recover quicker thereby increasing the amount of training time
- promote flexibility and proper ROM
- create a positive psychological effect
How can massage promote restoration for an athlete?
- by promoting circulation thereby enhancing removal of wastes (CO2, metabolites) and the return of fresh blood (O2, nutrients)
- promote lymphatic drainage
- help decrease post training soreness and stiffness
How can a massage help with prevention of injury?
by decreasing and preventing adhesion formation and by promoting joint mobility
How can massage help with rehabilitation?
- relieve muscle spasm
- decrease pain involved with injury
- increase recovery rate from an injury and helps prevent the development of chronic problems
