Describe discrete sills
skill, task or action that is characterized with a definitive beginning and ending
ie. golf swing, javelin throw, kick, punch
starts and stops immediately
Describe serial skills
this is a series of discrete skills strung together in a sequence to formulate a more complicated action
ie. triple jump, gymnastics, dance routine
Describe continuous skills
skill, task or action that has no definable beginning or ending. it is often repetitive, rhythmical in nature and long in duration.
ie. cycling, swimming, rowing, running, canoeing
How are sports classified by motor and cognitive elements?
- often with motor skills, the primary determinant for mvmt success is the quality of mvmt (ie. olympic power lifter)
- with cognitive skills, the primary determinant for success is the quality of a performer’s decision-making skill (ie. coach of a team)
How are sports classified by the level of environmental predictability?
open vs. closed
What is an open skill?
a skill, task or action performed in an environment that is variable and unpredictable.
