Classification of matter Flashcards
Matter
Anything that has mass and volume
Mass
quantity of matter in a physical body. It is also a measure of the body’s inertia, the resistance to acceleration when a net force is applied. An object’s mass also determines the strength of its gravitational attraction to other bodies
Elements
Elements are found on the Periodic Table of Elements
There are 90 naturally occurring elements on earth
b. About 20+ elements are synthetically made in laboratories
Compounds
A substance in which there are 2 or more atoms that are combined in fixed proportions
Mixture
Mixtures are made up of two or more substance that can be separated
Heterogeneous mixture
A mixture in which different materials can be distinguished
Homogeneous mixture
A mixture in which two or more gaseous, liquid, or solid substances are blended evenly
Physical properties
Any characteristic of a material that you can observe without changing the identity of the substances
Physical change
A physical change is a change in size, shape, or state of matter for an object
Chemical properties
Chemical Property—characteristics of a substance that indicates it can change chemically
Chemical change
Chemical change—a change of one substance into another
Solution
A homogenous mixture of particles so small they cannot be seen with a microscope and do not settle
Suspension
A heterogeneous mixture in which visible particles settle
Adhesive
Adhesion is the ability to stick to other surfaces.
Cohesive
Cohesive is the ability to stick to itself
