Climate Change Flashcards
Physical causes of climate change
sun spots
tilt of the earth
volcanic eruptions
ocean currents
ice caps and ice sheets melting
what is climate change
a significant change in global weather patterns over a long period of time
describe sun spots
we do not always recieve the same amount of heat from the sun
the number of sun spots peak every
11 years
the greater amount in sun spots, the more heat we receive from the sun this global temps increase
sun spots activity has doubled over the last century leading to an increase in global warming
tilt of the earth
research suggest that changes in the tilt as it orbits the sun may increase or decrease the temp on earth
- more tilt = warmer summer and colder winter
- less tilt = colder summer and warmer winter
volcanic eruptions
gases such as sulphur dioxide realeased during volcanic eruptions block solar energy and reflect heat
this can lead to cooling of the earth
bc these particles absorb the heat energy from the sun preventing it from reaching earths surface which lowers temps
ocean currents
over time ocean currents change direction and become stronger or weaker
when they do this they change the climates of places they flow past
ice caps and ice sheets melting
melting ice caps result in a decrease of the earths albedo affect - how reflective the earth is which aha lead to an increase of temps in the poles
the poles now absorb heat bc of an increase in dark water
as there is less snow and ice heat is reflected back into the atmosphere which leads to climate change
melting permafrost
large quantities of methane and carbon dioxide have been stored in permafrost for thousands of years so when it melts it all releases into the atmosphere and this an increase in global temps
what is the word equation to remember the physical causes of climate change

what are the human causes of climate change
Burning of fossil fuels
Deforestation
Landfill sites
Animal manure
Fertiliser
Car ownsershio increased
describe burning of fossil fuels
the burning fossil fuels such as coal and oil for transport and industry and power has resulted in huge amounts of Co2 being released into the atmosphere trapping heat and temps increase leading to climate change
describe deforestation
deforestation has led to an increase in co2 as there are less trees to produce oxygen and take in co2 trapping heat and increasing temps leading to climate change
land fill sites
huge areas of land used to bury waste which releases methane when it decomposes
animal manure
the cow releases 100kh of methane each year through belching and poo
there is at least 1.5 billon cows
therfor loads of methane is released
fertiliser
nitrous oxide is released when people add nitrogen to soil fertilisers
soils release over half of nitrous oxide in the atmosphere 2 to 4 million tonnes a year
