Climate Change Flashcards
What are the short term effects of climate change?
- Change in business opportunities e.g agriculture
- Stronger more frequent storms
- Droughts and floods
What are the long term effects of climate change?
- ice caps are melting causing sea levels to rise
- migration of environment refugees
- Changing pattern of insects born diseases e.g malaria and other diseases
What does the ice core data show?
The co2 levels rise and fall naturally over time and this causes change in temperature
What is the greenhouse effect?
Is when the earths atmosphere acts like an insulated blanked. It occurs because a huge amount of greenhouse gases released is more than there would usually be to heat up the earth
What does the keeling curve show?
It shows the co2 levels in the past 400 thousand years have been as high
What does the ice-core data show?
It shows that co2 levels rise and fall naturally overtime and this causes change in temperature
CASE STUDY - ICELAND
Negative effects of climate change in Iceland
- tourist industry will suffer
- an increase in storms which then sea levels will rise which causes flooding
- in the long term the decrease in glaciers will reduce the HEP production
CASE STUDY - ICELAND
Positive effects of climate change in Iceland?
- melting glaciers feed rivers and increase the amount of hydro-electric power
- At 1’c increase would allow farmers to grow crops, wheat and therefore allowing them to rear more sheep and cattle
