When was created the voting system that last until 1832 ?
1689 with the Bill of Rights
What were the two types of constituency ? What were they representing ?
- Counties = representing land owners
- Boroughs = representing trade interests and merchants
What were the “rotten” or “pocket” boroughs ?
Boroughs that barely had any voters = alaways had the same MP
Who could vote before 1832 ? What were the problems ?
People owning a land witth a value of 40 shillings (since 1430s and Henry VI)
= never adjusted to inflation
= power was owned by aristocracy only
When was the Peterloo Massacre ? What happened ?
16 August 1819, working class pacifically met to ask for an extension of the vote, army killed 15 people
What were the reactions to the Peterloo Massacre ?
Leaders were killed, people were outraged but the Prime Minister supported the army
What Acts were passed after the Peterloo Massacre ?
The Six Acts, preventing public disturbances
What wre the three visions opposing themselves at the time ?
- Tories
- Whigs
- Radicals
What was the Tories’ opinion on the extension of vote ? Why ?
Didn’t want to expand it cause afraid of the French Revolution and how it could spread in Britain if masses were given the right to vote, didn’t trust middle class
What happened in July 1830 ? What were the consequences ?
Swing Riots (agricultural movement of revolt) = were hanged
What did the death of Goerge IV cause ?
Dissolution of Parliament = new election = debate on a potential reform = creation of pro reform rallys
What was the strategy of the pro reformers ? Did it work ?
- Alliance between working class and middle class, creation of the Birmingham Political Union
- BUT Tories won
What was the Whigs’ opinion on the extension of vote ? Why ?
Were favorable cause believed that reforms could prevent revolts and the class alliance, believed that Parliament should represent people with property (middle class) and not only old aristocracy
What was the Radicals’ opinion on the extension of vote ? Why ?
Were favorable, believed everyone should be allowed to vote (“1 man 1 vote”). Were influenced by the French revolution and American Revolution
Who were the Radicals ?
Artisants, craftmen, skilled workers (were skilled before the Industrial Revolution)
