Compact + Spongy Bone Flashcards
Osteon (Haversian System)
Structural unit of compact bone; elongated cylinder
Central Canal
Runs through core of osteon; contains blood vessels and nerve fibers
Perforating (Volkmann’s) Canal
Lined with endosteum; connects blood vessels and nerves of periosteum, medullary cavity, and central canal
Lacunae
Small cavities that contain osteocytes
Osteocytes
Bone cell
Canaliculi
hairlike canals; connect lacunae to each other and central canal
Interstitial Lamellae
Incomplete lamellae; not part of osteon; fills gaps between forming osteons
Circumferential Lamellae
Deep to periosteum; superficial to endosteum; entire surface of diaphysis; resists twisting of long bone
Compact Bone
Aka lamellar bone
Spongy Bone
Appears poorly organized
Trabeculae
No osteons; irregularly arranged lamellae and osteocytes; capillaries supply nutrients
