16
Q

What does soluble mean?

A

A soluble substance will dissolve.

17
Q

What does insoluble mean?

A

A substance that does not dissolve in liquid is insoluble.

18
Q

What would sugar be?

A

A Solute.

19
Q

What would water be?

A

A solvent.

20
Q

What is formed by dissolving a substance in a liquid?

A

A solution.

21
Q

If the substance dissolves when I put it in the solvent what would it be?

A

Soluble

22
Q

If the substance doesn’t dissolve when I put it in the solvent, what would it be?

A

Insoluble.

23
Q

What are two separating techniques ?

A

Filtration and Evaporation (Distillation)

24
Q

What is Filtration used to separate?

A

Filtration is used to separate an insoluble solid from a solution.

25
Q

What is Evaporation used to separate?

A

Evaporation is used to separate a soluble substance from a liquid.

26
Q

What is Evaporation?

A

The water boils, evaporates and leaves the salt in the evaporating basin.

27
Q

What is the residue?

A

The residue is the solid left on the filter paper.

28
Q

What is the filtrate?

A

The filtrate is the liquid which passes through the filter paper.

29
Q

What is distillation?

A

Distillation is a method of separating two liquids. It works on the basis that each liquid will have a different boiling point.

30
Q

What are the three stages of distillation?

A

Boiling, Condensing and Collecting.

31
Q

What is Distillation used to separate?

A

Two liquids.

32
Q

What are the 7 steps of Distillation?

A
  1. A Solution of ink is put into a flask and heater.
  2. Water in the solution evaporates changing from a liquid to steam.
  3. Steam rises to the top of flask.
  4. Steam passes through the cold Liebig condenser.
  5. Steam cools and condenses back into water.
  6. Pure liquid water is collected in the beaker.
  7. A blue/black solid is left behind in the flask.
33
Q

What is Chromotography?

A

Forensic scientists use the technique called chromatography to separate a mixture of compounds.

34
Q

What is Chromatography used for?

A

Chromatography can be used to separate out inks. Each ink is made up of a different combination of colours.
