Computer Systems Flashcards
What is a computer system?
Input Processing Output
What is an input?
A physical input which is converted to a digital format to be used in processing.
What is processing?
When raw data is converted to information that can be used
What is an output?
Presenting the results of processing in a suitable format.
What is hardware?
The physical components that make up a computer.
What is internal hardware?
Give examples
The hardware that is found inside of the computer
CPU
Hard disk
Fan
Motherboard
What is external hardware / peripherals?
Give examples
Hardware that is found outside of the computer.
Monitor
Keyboard
Mouse
Printer
What is an input device?
A device that sends data to a computer
What is an output device?
A device that produces something in the real world based off of processing.
What is a processing device?
CPU - a device that takes data from an input, processes it and sends it for storage or output.
What is a storage device?
A device that stores data for use at a further data - non volatile.
What is a communication device?
Network cards - a device that allows a computer to connect - internet / bluetooth
What hardware is both an input and an output device?
A touchscreen
What is system software?
Software that must be installed on a computer in order for user interaction, hardware interaction and communication to take place and to keep the computer in working order.
Give 3 examples of system software.
Operating system
Antivirus
Utilites
What is application software?
Software that is not essential for running the computer but allows for the user to carry out extra tasks.
Give 3 examples of application software.
Microsoft word
Games
Web browser
What is the name of the computer found inside most appliances e.g. microwave, dishwasher?
Embedded computer / invisible computer
What do computers allow in businesses?
People from different countries to work together or for people to work from home.
What are computers used for in the military?
Logistics - tracking people and equipment to make sure it is in the right place at the right time
Command and control - commanders can issue orders to troops all around the world
Weapons - built in computers - missiles can track enemies
What does reliability mean?
Something is consistently good - trusted to deliver.
What are the two ways reliability can be measured in computing?
Avail MTTF (Mean Time to Failure)
