Geriatrics
the management of illness with the elderly

the process during which structural and functional changes accumulate in an organism as a result of the passage of time.
Senescence
the process of deterioration with age
Ageism
prejudice or discrimination against persons of a certain age group, young or old
Gerontophobia
Fear of getting old, an unreasonable fear or constant hatred of older persons
Primary aging
the process from conception to death and involves the natural occurrence of aging.
Secondary aging
Aging that is contributed to by disease or illness e.g., diabetes, hypertension or cancer
Aging process includes:
Development, maturation, decline
0 - 25 yrs., 25 - 50 yrs., 40 - 65 + yrs.
Young old
65 - 74 yrs.
Middle old
75 - 84 yrs.
Old old
85 - 100 yrs.
Elite old
100+
Definition
the provision of what is necessary for the maintenance of health and welfare.
Elderly care
Is the fulfillment of the special needs and requirements that are unique to the elderly.
