What drugs/doses are used to treat Mild Pyelonephritis?

Answer 1

Trimethoprim 300mg daily for 10 days
or
Amoxycillin/clavulanate 875 + 125mg 12hrly for 10 days
or
Cephalexin 500mg 6hrly for 10 days

Question 2

What drugs/doses are used to treat Severe Pyelonephritis?

Answer 2

Emprical:
- IV amoxycillin
AND
- IV gentamycin

THEN use guided therapy from MCS
If NO MCS data or empirical still needed after 72hrs:
- IV ceftriaxone or IV cefotaxime (10-14 days - part can be oral)

NOTE: do not want to give gentamicin for long as it is nephrotoxic & ototoxic.
