- 31st July(infantry attack)-November 6th 1917-325000 allied casualties in 5 miles
- Haig wanted Britain to attack in Flanders
- concerned that’s Russia will withdraw meaning Germany could concentrate troops on western front
- June 7th 1917-19 underground mines exploded at same time- Messines Ridge- destroyed drainage system-ground churned up
- 10000 Germans killed - 3 hours for British to take positions
- heavy rain-bog- clogged rifles + stopped tanks
- September-weather better- British took ground w/ Canadians and claimed passchendaele- haig said it was a victory
