Q

_____________ might be 30 minutes which is quick…used before a colonoscopy test

A

Magnesium citrate

17
Q

Philips Milk of Mag at 3 to 6 hours

A
18
Q

Fleet enema onset is 2 to 15 minutes to produce a bowel movement…we worry about electrolyte imbalances so we might see hypomagnesemia which results in hypotension, muscle weakness and fatigue

A
19
Q

First line treatment will be ____________ for most simple constipation cases then a second choice would be Dulcolax

A

miralax

20
Q

(Senna can cause cramping in pts so we won’t always recommend this one first)

A
21
Q

We want to make sure pt uses stimulants for least amount of time…smallest dose for the least amount of time because your bowels can get use to stimulant laxatives and then they would loose their own ability to have a sense of needing to go and having the ability to go and sometimes these are abused

A
22
Q

A bisacodyl suppository takes 15 to 60 minutes to work…it’s a quick option for pts however pts prefer an oral agent

A
23
Q

Always start with 1 tablet first 😊

What is active ingredient in Dulcolax? 600mg ______________ (saline laxative)
30 minutes to 6 hours

A

magnesium hydroxide

24
Q

Saline Laxative Agents
Mag citrate, mag hydroxide, mono-&dibasic sodium
phosphate, mag sulfate

Ions retained in intestinal wall & draw water in by osmosis
increase intraluminal pressure & intestinal motility

Oral onset: 30 min-3 hrs- 6 hrs
Rectal: 2-15 min

Electrolyte imbalances: hypermagnesemia (hypotension,
muscle weakness, fatigue)
& Sodium phosphate- ___________________, hypocalcemia,
hypernatremia

A

hyperphosphatemia

25
Q

______________

Mineral oil
* Soften fecal contents in colon by coating stool & preventing colonic
absorption of fecal water
* Onset: 6-8 hours after oral (5-15 min rectal)
** DON’T recommend there are safer agents**
Anal leakage of oil, lipid pneumonia
Impair A, D, E, K absorption

A

Lubricant Agent
