Q

DESCRIBE the three major functions of the Containment Structure

A
  • The primary function of containment is to provide an essentially leak-tight barrier against the uncontrolled release of radioactivity to the environment.
  • The containment also provides radiation shielding during normal operation and during accident conditions
  • In addition, the containment protects the reactor vessel and all other safety related systems, structures, and components housed and supported within it from external environmental conditions and loads

Q

DESCRIBE the purpose of the containment sumps.

A

floor sumps
• Containment A Sump
– collects normal condensation and drains including RCP #3 seal leakoff - used as a means of RC system leak detection.
• Containment B Sump
– not expected to collect anything other than condensation.
– would detect any leakage from seal table

recirculation sumps
provide the means for continuous long term core and containment cooling in the event of a Loss Of Coolant Accident (LOCA).

Q

DESCRIBE the personnel airlock interlock system

A

The personnel airlock doors are mechanically interlocked such that it is not possible to open both airlock doors at the same time. This interlock can be defeated by procedure.
