Can occur in advanced COPD

  • Either:
    • Secondary RV hypertrophy due to pulmonary HTN
    • Peripheral oedema due to salt & water retention
  • Causes chronic alveolar hypoxia and hypercapnia
    • Due to vasoconstriction of the pulmonary arterioles

  • Optimal COPD treatment, including smoking cessation help
  • Diuretics: symptom relief
