Q

What are 2 pieces of qualitative data / results

A
  • Participants obeyed due to external forces (entered agencies state) “ I co operated because the Experimenter told me to”
  • Disobedient participants felt responsible for their actions
“ I didn’t want to do unethical things”

13
Q

What are 3 conclusions from the experiment

A

People behave differently than expected when they are in situations that are unfamiliar / somewhat extreme- so what they believe they’ll do us quite different to what they actually do

Whistle-blowers have more faith than either obedient ot disobedient individuals

People tend to obey authority even if the authority is unjust

14
Q

What is a strength and weakness of the research method

A

It was a laboratory study so they had high control of extraneous variables which increases internal validity as you can be sure you’re measuring what you intend to measure for example all the participants were tested in the same rooms and were given the same instructions to follow

Participants could have guessed the true aim of the study which could lead to demand characteristics and therefore reducing validity / the participants volunteered and tested in unfamiliar environment so show diff behaviours to what they would irl so low ecological validity

15
Q

Sampling bias

A

No gender bias as there were both men and women included in the sample

Age bias - all undergraduate students they could either be more likely to be disobedient than the general public
All from Amsterdam

16
Q

Evaluate the types of data collected

A

Quantitative data - improves validity of the research because it makes it easy to compare the results

Qualitative data - insight into why participants behaved in certain ways

17
Q

Evaluate the ethics of the study

A

It was an overall ethical study as participants were tested ethically and protected from harm and were also debriefed at the end of the study - they were told that the aim was to find out about obedience or whistle blowing not sensory deprivation

18
Q

Evaluate the reliability of the study

A

It is high in internal reliability because the study used standardised procedures to ensure the procedure was carried out in a consistent way for example all the participants were told the same cover story and given the sa,pme instructions/ timings

Psychometrics used which have been shown to be highly reliable HEXACO personality test has high internal consistency as uses similar statements so consistency of response can be checked

19
Q

Evaluate ethnocentrism

A

All the students were rom Amsterdam so results can’t be generalised to other cultures
