Core Studies - Moray (Auditory Attention) Flashcards
What is the background of Moray’s study?
Cherry’s study on selective attention in 1953 which showed that when people were shadowing they had no recall of the rejected messages
What was the aim of experiment 1?
To further test Cherry’s findings of shadowed and rejected messages
What was the aim of experiment 2?
To test what can break through the attention block
What was the aim of experiment 3?
To see if expectations affect the processing of the rejected message and what else other than names can break the block
What was the method and design for experiment 1?
Method = laboratory
Design = repeated measures
What was the method and design for experiment 2?
Method = labratory
Design = repeated measures
What was the method and design for experiment 3?
Method = laboratory method
Design = independent measures design
What is the independent and dependant variable in experiment 1?
Independent = whether the message is played to shadowed or rejected ear
Dependant = the number of words recognised correctly from the rejected message
What was the dependant and independent variables in experiment 2?
Independent = whether or not the instructions were prefixed with the participants name
Dependant = The number of instructions of instructions they heard when prefixed compared to when not prefixed
What is the independent and dependant variable in experiment 3?
Independent = whether or not they were told to remember the digits
Dependant = Number of digits remembered correctly
What was the procedure of experiment 1?
The participants had headphones which played 2 messages at once
1) In rejected ear they had 7 words which were repeated 35 times
2) A passage in shadowed ear
3) participants asked what they recall from the rejected message
4) participants asked to take a recognition test
What was the procedure for experiment 2?
1) The participants shadowed 10 short passages in their right ear
2) Another passage played in second ear
3) They were told that their responses would be recorded so they should make as few mistakes as possible
4) The instructions they heard were either prefixed with participants name or not
What was the procedure for experiment 3?
1) Participants shadowed one of two passages which were played simultaneously
2) The digits were insterted towards the end of the messages in either one or both ears
3) One group were told they’d be asked about shadowed message the other group were told to remember as many numbers as possible
What were the results of experiment 1?
Shadowed = 4.9/7
Rejected = 1.9/7
Control = 2.6/7
What were the results of experiment 2?
39 with name 20 heard
36 no name 4 heard
