Cosmo Flashcards
mantle
the fold of skin in front of the cuticle
Nail matrix
is the area where your fingernails and toenails start to grow.
nail root
The root portion of this nail lies below the skin, underneath the nail, and extends several millimeters into the finger. It produces most of the volume of the nail and the nail bed.
nail bed
the formative layer of cells underlying the fingernail or toenail.
Nail plate
is the hard part of the nail, made of translucent keratin protein
Lunula
the white area at the base of a fingernail.
eponychium
the thickened layer of skin at the base of the fingernails and toenails
cuticle
is the outermost part of the hair shaft.
nail grooves
The indentation between the edges of the nail plate and the skin.
side walls
is the skin on either side of the nail plate,
perionychium
The tissue surrounding the nail
Free edge
The Nail Free Edge, also known as the Free Nail Angle, of the nail is the part of the lamina that protrudes from the nail bed; it is therefore a “dead” and painless part of the nail.
hyponychium
The hyponychium is the area of epithelium, particularly the thickened portion, underlying the free edge of the nail plate on the nail. Its proximal border is immediately distal to distal limit of nail bed—a.k.a. the onychodermal band (the line along the interface of the nail bed and the nail plate).
onychosis
A nail disease or onychosis is a disease or deformity of the nail. Although the nail is a structure produced by the skin and is a skin appendage, nail diseases have a distinct classification as they have their own signs and symptoms which may relate to other medical conditions.
