Q

What is an intermolecular force?

A
  • The covalent bond that holds the atoms together, is strong.
  • However, there are weak forces between each molecule.

Q

Melting/boiling points?

A
  • Small covalent bonds have low boling/melting points.
  • Because not much energy is needed to overcome their weak intermolecular forces
  • Therefore, they are gases/liquids at room temperature.

Q

What about large covalent molecules like polymers or oils?

In terms of boiling points

A
  • Large molecules have more intermolecular forces
  • So they have slightly higher melting and boiling points

Q

Can covalent compounds like water conduct electricity?

A
  • No
  • It is an excellent solvent, so ions can dissolve into it.
