Q

Impressionism

A

In 1874, a group of artists held an exhibition in Paris. One of these is Claude Monet, who exhibited a painting entitled Impression, Sunrise. The critics were shocked by what they saw that they took the word impression from Monet’s title and used it as a label when referring, unkindly, to all the works in the exhibition. The movement called, Impressionism, was described as an art style that tried to capture an impression of what the eye sees at a given moment and the effects of sunlight on the subject.

Expressionism

A

At the beginning of the 20th century, some artists who have been connected with Impressionism began to find fault with it. They felt that this style sacrificed too much by trying to capture the momentary effects of sunlight on forms and colors. They felt that art should present a more personal, expressive view of life. In Germany, the view was eagerly accepted by several groups of artists. The art movement in which artworks conveyed strong feelings was called Expressionism.

Q

Dadaism

A

Founded in Zurich, Switzerland in 1916, one group of artists expressed their disillusionment in their art. Known as Dada, the movement got its name from a nonsense word. Throughout its life span for six years, Dada seemed nonsensical, but it had a no-nonsense aim. It protested the madness of World War I. In this first global war, millions of people either suffered or died. It is no wonder that Dadaist artists felt that they could no longer trust reason and society. Their alternative was to overthrow all authority, tradition, and cultivate absurdity.

Dada’s main strategy had a more serious purpose than merely to denounce and shock. They hoped to awaken the creative imagination that the war so utterly degraded if not entirely extinguished.

Q

Who is the Dada movement’s most famous inventor?

A

In America, the most well-known Dadaist was Marcel Duchamp, whose earliest work was a ready-made bicycle-wheel mounted on the kitchen stool (1913) His most outrageous work was the Fountain (1917)- an industrial porcelain urinal set sideways and signed ‘R. Mutt’, Duchamp pseudonym. Fountain was a pure provocation. The exhibition organizers had stated that all entries would be accepted, and Duchamp wanted to see if they really meant it. When it is rejected for its outrageousness, Duchamp defended it. He said that he took an ordinary object, placed it so that its useful significance disappeared, to create a new thought for that object.

Op Art

A

Another art movement was developed in the United States in the mid-1960s. Optical Art or Op Art is a style that combines color and abstract patterns to create an impression of movement on the picture surface by means of powerful optical effects or illusions. In traditional paintings, the aim was to draw the viewer into the work. In contrast, Op Art pictures seem to move, vibrate or both and reach out to the viewer.

Q

How did OP Art begin?

A

Hungarian-born Victor Vasarely was one of the key figures in the creation of OP Art. His lifelong fascination with line and pattern, along with his experiment on creating illusion of movement in his paintings, became a significant influence on younger artists of the time. Another artist, M. C. Escher - whose style sometimes been called Op Art in origin - created works with interesting but complicated composition. As a result of these earlier developments, viewers began to see Op Art showing up everywhere; in prin, in television advertising, as album art, clothes, and apparels, and interior decoration.

Q

Characteristics of Op Art

A
  1. Op Art exists to fool the eye. Op compositions create a sort of visual tension in the viewer’s mind that gives works the illusion of movement.
  2. The use of geometric figures eliminated realistic subject matter.
  3. The elements - colors, line, and shape - are carefully chosen to achieve maximum effect.
