Criticisms Of the Augustinian theodicy Flashcards
Free- will defence does not explain what?
The origin of evil
- why did God allow us free-will and the possibility to chose evil
What does it contradict about God
His omniscience
- if God knows all then surely God would know that we would misuse free-will
What has John Mackie argued
That it could be possible for an omnipotent God to create beings capable only of choosing the good
It is based on the fall in genesis, what would most modern scholars argue
that is it not historically accurate
Many would argue that it is unjust for God to?
Punish all humans for the sin of Adam and Eve and that there is no genetic evidence that a tendency to sin is passed on in reproduction
many religious believers argue that?
Evil is a very real entity in the form of Satan
who provided 3 criticisms to the theodicy
Schleiermacher
What were the 3 criticisms
1 - the theodicy is a contradiction, if God created the world perfectly where did the evil come from
2 - knowledge of good and evil, Could Adam and Eve chose to disobey God when they had no knowledge of disobedience and evil
3 - science - world was first perfect then ruined by humans Augustinian
But Big bang theory and theory of evolution prove the theodicy to be unreliable as these theories rely on the world being imperfect not perfect
If god exists and there is proof of evolution what does this mean
He must have created evolution and the natural suffering to go with it, therefore evil is God’s fault
