Cromer Flashcards
Where?
Cromer is situated on the east coast of England in county Norfolk, East Anglia.
What is the Case study for?
A case study of a coastal environment , the processes affecting this coast, its land forms and its management
How was the beach formed?
-attrition
-abrasion
-corrasion
-undercutting
-solution
The sediment is transported along the coast and then deposited. This is called long shore drift.
Why are the beaches and cliffs vulnerable?
Weak geology- weight of clay can cause slumping.
storms- common in the north sea
human action- some sea defences in one area can undermine the cliffs in another area.
What strategies are being used? (hard engineering)
Timber revetments
groynes
gabion cages
sea walls
What strategies are being used? (soft engineering)
vegetation planting
managed retreat
Management?
Managed retreat policy- where limited will be spent to keep the coasts long term. usually an area with few building may be allowed to be eroded as it is not worth major defences being built.
Cost benefit analysis policy- Council counts up the costs and benefits of paying out for defences in a particular area.
Who pays?
75% - Central government
25%- Norfolk County Council
