Cytogenetics II L10 Flashcards
1
Q
Define Metacentric
A
When centromere is right in the middle of p and q relativley equal in length
2
Q
Define submetacentric
A
When centromere is higher up therefore q is longer
3
Q
Define acrocentric
A
When centromere is high up and p is almost non-existent (but still there)
4
Q
Define translocation
A
Exchange of material between 2+ chromosomes
5
Q
What are the two types of translocations and define them
A
- Balanced (reciprocal): identified by chance
2. Unbalanced: have a combination of monosome and trisome (picked up early)
6
Q
What is a Robertsonian translocation?
A
Occurs between acrocentric chromosomes
A loss of the non-critical genes in the short arm (p) regions
